Position Summary:

Reports to the Director of Spiritual Care and is responsible for the provisions of spiritual care and emotional support to patients, families, and hospital employees in accordance with the philosophy and mission of the Department of Pastoral Care and The Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH).

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Deliver comprehensive spiritual care and emotional support to patients, families, and hospital employees, particularly those facing critical illness, Brain Death, or Cardiac Death diagnoses.
  • Maintain a consistent, supportive presence and perform appropriate interventions to assess and facilitate a family's accurate understanding of a patient's prognosis, particularly in cases of Brain or Cardiac Death and subsequent diagnostic examinations.
  • Be actively present with grieving families immediately following end-of-life decisions, providing expert bereavement care, and ensuring access to follow-up resources.
  • Complete the Donor Tracking Tool forms and professional documentation promptly. Notify the Ethics Committee as instructed, and actively participate in Donor Council Meetings.
  • Proactively recognize and communicate complex family dynamics and potential conflicts that arise when the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), Living Legacy Foundation (LLF), prepares to approach the family regarding possible organ and/or tissue donation.
  • Actively lead the "Huddle" — a collaborative planning meeting with medical, interdisciplinary teams, and LLF representatives — to develop a unified, supportive, and ethical plan for the donation approach.
  • Be proactive in family meetings, assisting families in understanding the donation process while providing essential consultation and support focused on faith and spirituality.
  • Help enforce JHH Brain Death and Cardiac Death protocols. Be present at the time of official consent, assisting LLF representatives with necessary paperwork, including the comprehensive medical and social history.
  • Work collaboratively with the Donor Coordinator to ensure a fair, ethical, and seamless process from the initial approach through to the final consent.
  • Offer direct clinical mentorship to Family Advocate Fellows and Family Advocate Residents. Oversee the clinical work of Family Advocate Fellows.
  • CPE Program Contribution: Contribute significantly to the education and training of Chaplain Interns and Residents enrolled in the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs.
  • Program Management: Manage the complex Family Advocate on-call schedule in collaboration with Family Advocate Chaplain Fellows and Family Advocate CPE Residents.
  • Program Advancement: Actively explore and develop possibilities and plans to enhance and grow the effectiveness of the Family Advocate Program.
  • Research and Education: Oversee relevant research projects and proposals/proposals and deliver educational seminars on the Family Advocate role throughout the hospital.
  • Worship Services: Attend and lead memorial services and other meetings in accordance with the departmental role.

Full-time position - 40 hours per week. Exempt and on-call.

Education:

Master of Divinity degree (or equivalent of formal theological education from a theological seminary accredited by the Association of Theological Schools). Minimum of four units of CPE (offered by an ACPE, Inc. accredited CPE Center), Ordination by a recognized faith group.

Experience, Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to interact with grieving families in a supportive manner while taking into consideration socio-political, religious, and cultural differences.
  • A minimum of four units of CPE (by an ACPE, Inc. accredited CPE Center), Board Certification as a health care chaplain through the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), or a certifying and accrediting agency of equal standing.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a recognized field of ministry with active ministry and/or teaching experience in the areas of death, dying, grief, and loss. Relevant experience in crisis care, death, and the process of organ and tissue donation is required. A minimum of two years in a supervisory role is preferred.

Salary Range: Minimum 27.97/hour - Maximum 46.18/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
